Let the Data People Do the Data

Ok data people, listen up, you know you all can relate to these questions from your internal clients:

“Listen, I don’t know if you do this or not, but…,”

or “Gee, I know you are only the data person but…”

or “My terminal keyboard isn’t working on my desk and the markets are closing, so…” (this is one of my personal favorites, which was actually once asked of me)

So why is it that most firms think the Data group has all the answers – no matter what the question?  Well perhaps it’s because we should.

Silence is Golden

Thinking back over 20 years in banking and finance, I often reminisce about moments that will stick with me forever.  One day, I was sitting in my office on a sunny Chicago afternoon, the US trading day was coming to a close and one of the junior traders came barging in.  He looked at me and said without any hesitation, “Lis, your job sucks.  The only time someone comes to see you or calls you is when there’s a problem.”  All I could do was laugh at him…but he was right.   A quiet day in most people’s worlds means there’s a problem – no sales calls, people are on vacation, the sky is falling.  But in the world of financial data, silence is golden.

Data: the Common Denominator

When we think about the global trading environment – what do we think about?  If we’re a passive investor we think about where our portfolio closed today.  If we’re active investors, we think about prices, dividends, settlement instructions, risk, volatility…the list goes on and on.  How we view the market is completely dependent on the correlation of our role within the market.  Am I a front office execution trader?  Are we analysts?  Do I spend hours churning models in the quant shop?  Do I ensure our firm is compliant and the regulators are happy?   Am I part of the Operations teams who make sure the firm knows where it is at the close of every business day?
